WHY DOES THE SCHOOL

ASK FOR DONATIONS?

Donations are used to help fund projects that would otherwise not be possible. These include improvements to our core educational programmes, financial aid/bursaries to deserving students, and enhancing the facilities, infrastructure and learning experiences to provide our students with the very best education. Without donations, we would need to increase tuition fees to make any improvements to the school.

WHO LEADS THE FUNDRAISING

FOR THE SCHOOL?

The Board of Directors establishes an annual budget and approves capital improvements and the fundraising/financing plans for school development.

The Development Committee, comprised of members of the Board, school administration (including the Development Officer) and volunteer parents lead donation drives and coordinate the annual fundraising schedule of events.

Capital Campaign Committees are formed by the Board of Directors during periods of major school improvements, to raise capital to fund development. These committees are comprised of Board members, school administrative staff, parents and key stakeholders.

The school Administration team controls the school spending and manages the budgeted projects and improvements, with input from various committees of the Board of Directors.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) organizes fundraisers and events aimed at both raising money and increasing the school’s community spirit. They support the school’s priorities by directing money raised towards the projects they wish to see completed.

The Parent Ambassadors are volunteers who encourage parents to participate in fundraising and donation drives throughout the year. They champion the development initiatives to make the school experience outstanding for our students.

WHAT CAMPAIGNS ARE ONGOING FOR THE 2018/19 SCHOOL YEAR?

There are currently 3 development campaigns you should be aware of:

Capital Campaign

The goal is to raise $6 million in charitable donations to support our whole-school improvement plan.

The objective is threefold:

  • Improve our campus with a new building and major renovations to existing space

  • Expand our programmes by continuing to build our diversity and bursary programmes and launching our IB Diploma Programme

  • Develop our staff by continuing to train our teachers and hire new IB teachers and department/subject heads

Annual 5-Star Appeal

We aim to raise $500,000 annually to support development initiatives that directly impact students, geared at maintaining the student experience at a 5-Star level of distinction. This appeal supports our bursary programme, and this year will support our whole-school plan as we begin to expand and improve our campus and curriculum.

PTA Fundraisers

Held throughout the year to generate funds for PTA-sponsored projects that align with and support the school’s development priorities. PTA events foster a sense of community and family at Somersfield.

WHAT WILL I BE ASKED TO GIVE

THIS YEAR, AND WHEN?

At the start of the school year, parents will be asked to consider how they are able to help the school this year. We ask that each family budget whatever amount they are able to contribute, and to give thought to the areas of giving they wish to support. It is recognized that not all of our families are able to donate financially. Many of our families instead choose to donate “in-kind”, offering help around campus or supporting the school with services and skills in which parents have expertise. Regardless of where you choose to help, we are truly grateful and our students benefit from every donation!

We endeavour to spread our fundraising throughout the year. Each month you can expect different events and fundraisers, so it’s important to choose where you’ll make a difference.

WHO ARE THE SCHOOL'S MAIN DONORS?

Our main donors are our parents! Somersfield was established by a group of parents who wished to see a unique Montessori/inquiry-based education offered in Bermuda, and they donated the funds to start our school. Each phase of our development has been successful thanks to the generous donations of current and former parents, with a bit of help from the broader community.

Our Alumni base is growing as we’re now in our 26th year, and in 2021 we will see our students graduate from Somersfield Academy with IB Diplomas.

We have grown this far without an endowment fund. While we hope to one day establish this, for now we rely on you, our key supporters, to ensure the longevity of our school.

Please consider donating this year and help us improve our campus and educational offering!
