THE GREEN TEAM
Committed to a 'Green Philosophy'
At the simplest level Somersfield is committed to a 'Green' philosophy which ensures that waste is kept to a minimum. The school is also committed to maintaining a sanitary and safe place for students and staff to eat and the expectation is that all students and staff work together to minimize waste and to keep the school clean.
Somersfield also has an active 'Green Team' that proactively coordinates all green activities, celebrates good practices, supports and suggests green initiatives. Its aim is to spread the understanding of the importance of a healthy environment in all that we do and to actively promote earth friendly initiatives and understanding across the whole school.
Committed to the EcoSchools Programme
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. The aim is to make schools a greener place to learn. Students are at the heart of Eco-Schools. Students form and lead an Eco-Committee and help to carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of the school. The student Eco-Committee comes under the umbrella of Somersfield's Green team. The Green team is a collaborative group that includes parents, staff, administrators and teachers from all levels of Somersfield. The Green Team proactively coordinates all green activities, celebrates good practices, supports and suggests green initiatives. Its aim is to spread the understanding of the importance of a healthy environment in all that we do and to actively promote earth friendly initiatives and understanding across the whole school.
Locally, The EcoSchools programme is delivered, assessed and accredited by Greenrock. We are very happy to have had their support and partnership through this process of becoming Bermuda's first Green Flag EcoSchool. There are eight pathways to choose from locally and Somersfield has chosen to do the Grounds pathway and the Trash and Waste Reduction pathway. Along the way, we have learned many things about our school community and continue to seek input from our community members to become an even more sustainable place. We were assessed rigorously by Greenrock and their community partners and are very happy to have reached this stage in our journey.
The committee always welcomes ideas and suggestions that will keep Somersfield as the leading green school in Bermuda.
